Today I took a break from the steady rhythm of camp projects and decided to make a supply run—plus sneak in a little sightseeing. I made the nearly two-hour drive down to Home Depot in Ellsworth, stocking up on essentials for the bathroom rebuild and a few other upcoming tasks. As usual, I spent more than I intended. No surprise there.
After that, I figured why not keep going and treat myself to a detour? I headed east to Lubec, Maine, the easternmost town in the U.S., nestled right along the Canadian border. As you drive into town, the first thing that catches your eye is a striking steel arched bridge spanning the river into Canada. I wasn’t there to cross the border—just curious to check out the town I’d heard so much about.
One of the highlights was the Lubec Brewing Company, a cozy tavern in town. I sampled their signature brew, the Quoddy Head Red, named after the nearby Quoddy Head State Park. It was delicious—crisp, smooth, and just what I needed. I grabbed a bratwurst sandwich for lunch, simple and satisfying, and started heading back.
On the return trip, I noticed a change on Democrat Ridge Road. Since it was Saturday, the logging crews were off, and the road seemed noticeably better—less rutted and chewed up. Maybe they’re tapering off on cutting and focusing more on hauling and staging, because there are still plenty of downed trees piled up, but the surface felt smoother. Here’s hoping they tidy up the rest of the road before wrapping up their operations.
All in all, it was a welcome breather—a good day to explore a bit, rest my body, and see more of this wild corner of Maine I now call home.
That’s it for Day 13. Hope your day was a good one too.
