Restoration of a Rustic 1964 Cabin

Day 31 – Tuesday, August 19

It was another cold night in the 40s. I have to admit, it’s a real comfort to finally have a working toilet inside the cabin. On nights like these, not having to step outside to the outhouse makes a world of difference.

The hard work on the roof is really taking a toll on my body. I’m finding it harder to move my arms—they’re constantly numb. About ten years ago, I had a spine injury that required fusion surgery. The goal was to keep the numbness at bay, but it never fully worked. As long as I don’t overdo heavy work, it’s manageable. Well, my body clearly thinks I’ve been overdoing it, because the numbness has been getting extreme. Thankfully, a steady dose of ibuprofen helped loosen things up enough to keep going.

The loggers started late today, around 7 o’clock, and so did I. From then on, it was a full day of roof work. By evening, I had all but two panels installed. The final two are tricky—they cover the screened-in porch, where the roof supports are uneven. That means a lot of shimming with the furring strips to get a level surface before the panels can go on. It took plenty of time and effort, but I think I’ve got it all set up for tomorrow’s finish.

All in all, a long, demanding day, but real progress.
