The morning was very cold in the cabin. We got up a little before 7, made coffee, and walked down by the lake. A thick fog hung over the water, hiding the far shore. Two loons popped up nearby, and we watched them swim past. Meanwhile, our dogs had a great time chasing each other around for a good five minutes. At ten years old, it was heartwarming to see them running like puppies again.

After breakfast, we tackled some heavy lifting. The refrigerator and stove were moved out of the cabin to the yard, where I plan to take them apart bit by bit since they’re so hard to move. We also shifted the wood stove to the side of the cabin, opening up the middle of the room. That one change alone made a huge difference in how the cabin feels.

I then put some time into the marsh trail, slowly working to make the path between the driveway and the cabin more manageable. At the same time, Trudy was busy inside, making real progress in organizing and cleaning. The place is starting to look much more like home.

In the afternoon we drove north to Houlton, Maine, about an hour and a half from the cabin. I’d never been there before, but the trip turned out underwhelming. The town was quiet and uneventful, and lunch at Tim Horton’s—a Canadian-style fast-food spot—was nothing to write home about. At least now we can say we’ve been there.

We made it back to the cabin in the evening and wound down by watching the Phillies game.
