It was another slow start this morning.
I spent a fair amount of time trying to decide what I was going to accomplish today—which, I’ve discovered, can be an excellent way of avoiding actually accomplishing any of it.
Eventually, I came up with another strategy for putting off work:
Go to Calais.
I had a package waiting for me there, and I also needed to return a rake to Walmart.
I’d bought the rake to level out some of the dirt I’d spread across the bog with the Dingo.
It lasted approximately two minutes.
Apparently the bog won.
Fortunately, on my trip to Canada I’d picked up a much sturdier rake, and that one has been working quite well. So the broken one went back to Walmart.
Since I was already in Calais, I decided to have lunch at St. Croix Tap & Table downtown.
I’ve eaten there on previous trips and have accumulated some good memories from the place.
It’s where I once met a traveling nurse and ended up having a long, enjoyable conversation with him. And on another visit, it’s where I encountered something I don’t think I’d ever seen before:
A baby sitting on the bar.
Not at the bar.
On the bar.
You never know what you’re going to get in Calais.
Today’s visit wasn’t quite that eventful, but I had a lovely lunch of fish and chips, which was probably exactly what I needed.
Then it was back to Camp Hidey Ho.
One thing I did spend some productive time on today was designing a closet for what I’ll call the “bathroom room” in the cabin.
A closet has always been part of the plan for that space, but like quite a few things around here, I’ve simply never gotten around to building it.
This year, though, I have a little more motivation.
I’m planning to leave the large batteries here over the winter, and I’d like to have a protected, dedicated place to store them rather than simply leaving them sitting around the cabin.
So I’m hoping to get the closet built before I leave.
We’ll see.
Otherwise, it was another day of a little bit of this and a little bit of that.
A little more chinking.
A little more work on the walkway.
A little planning.
But not what I would call a highly productive day.
I’m starting to recognize what’s happening.
I’m not only running out of days.
I think I’m running out of steam.
After more than three weeks of hauling lumber, moving dirt, staining logs, chinking walls, cutting trees, wrestling with the bog and generally finding new ways to make myself sore, I’m beginning to slow down.
Maybe that’s not such a bad thing.
My time at Camp Hidey Ho for this year is starting to wind down, and perhaps my body has figured that out before my brain has.
Tomorrow is Wednesday, so I’m hoping to make it over to the community building and finally get an answer to the question the insurance inspector asked:
If Camp Hidey Ho catches fire, exactly which fire department is coming to put it out?
It seems like something I should probably know.
And I’m also hoping the weather forecast for this coming weekend improves enough that Jen, Austin, and the girls can finally make it up.
After nearly a month of mostly talking to myself, a mouse, a loon and, more recently, three river otters, having some actual human visitors would be a very nice change of pace.
We’ll see what tomorrow brings.
