Today was a day of extremes — mostly extreme heat. The temperature soared to 97°F, with the “real feel” hitting 107°F. Even in the shade it felt like 98°F, and inside the cabin the thermometer stubbornly read 100°F. Not exactly an ideal day for working on a roof… yet that’s where I spent my morning.

I actually made some decent progress before the heat became unbearable. By noon I called it quits, had some lunch, and took a long, cooling dip in the lake. After that, the idea of climbing back up on the roof in the blazing sun lost all appeal.

If there was any small consolation, it was that the loggers started at their usual crack-of-five schedule — before the sun even officially rose at 5:30 — but they knocked off by 10 a.m., which is rare. I switched to shaded ground-level projects for the rest of the afternoon.

Around 3 p.m., I realized I’d hit a new problem: I was out of shirts. Yesterday was a three-shirt day; today would have been four or five, but I didn’t have the inventory. Time for a laundromat run. I headed down to town, got the wash going, and realized it was late enough — closer to 5:30 — that I was right next to the Old School Family Restaurant at dinnertime. Naturally, I stopped in. I ordered a lobster roll that looked picture-perfect, but the flavor was oddly absent — my second dinner there lately that hasn’t measured up. Breakfasts there, however, remain flawless, so maybe I’ll stick to those.

The lake was calm when I got back, so I ferried more roofing panels over to the cabin. While I was loading up, I spotted the neighbors heading out in their boat and motored over for a quick chat. They were heading out to fish, but it was nice to say hello in person.

I ended the evening with a bit of the Phillies game and an early bedtime. Tomorrow’s forecast calls for a high of 85 — practically a cold front compared to today — so I’m aiming for an early start to get some real work done before the heat sets in.
